When mucking out your horse or attending to duties in the yard or paddock it is important to be kitted out in the most comfortable, protective equestrian clothing and footwear.

As you will be working outside year-round it is important that you shield your skin from the sun and the cold. It is also important to protect yourself from injury in case your horse kicks or bites you. In addition, you need to make sure that you are wearing clothes that are easy to manoeuvre in.

Clothing and footwear for mucking out

Dogwood has put together the following checklist to make mucking out a more comfortable experience for horse lovers:

Wear well fitted clothing - if your clothing is too baggy it may become caught on things or let the cold air in but if it is too tight you will find it difficult to move around your horse, especially in the confined space of a horse stable.

Wear long sleeves - long sleeves provide extra protection if your horse decides to give you an equine nip. A long sleeved cotton t-shirt or sweatshirt is ideal.

Wear dark jodhpurs - jodhpurs offer flexibility when moving quickly around the stables. It is better to wear darker colours when mucking out as they will stay smarter for longer.

Wear a body warmer - a body warmer worn over your sweatshirt in cooler weather will enable you to maintain most of your body heat but also allow you the flexibility to move around that a heavier jacket may not.

Wear easy-to-clean boots - a pair of mucker boots are the best bet as they offer the greatest protection against muck and your horse's hooves. However, a pair of Wellington boots will keep the feet warm and dry or a pair of jodhpur boots with steel enforced toe caps will offer some protection to your feet if trampled.
