When browsing the horse for sale section most horse lovers are curious to see which particular horse breeds are on the market and which equine colours they are available in.

Whether you are considering buying a grey, strawberry roan or palomino horse or pony, Dogwood is here to guide you through the terms used to describe equine colours:

  • Bay - reddish (varying from red, brown to yellowish) coat with a black mane, tail and points (limbs)
  • Black - black all over apart from occasional white marks to the leg and/or head
  • Blue roan - black or brown body with white hair that has a blue tinge
  • Brindle - brown or grey streaked or patched with a darker colour
  • Brown - mixture of black and brown hairs, with black limbs, mane and tail
  • Chestnut - varies from a pale golden colour to a rich, red gold. The mane and tail may be lighter or darker than the coat
  • Cream/cremello - cream coat with unpigmented skin
  • Dappled grey - light grey base coat with darker grey rings
  • Dun - light sandy coloured coat (ranging from yellow to mousey) with black mane and tail. A dark dorsal eel-stripe can extend from the line of the neck to the tail. Zebra markings on the withers and legs may also feature
  • Fleabitten grey - grey base coat speckled with brown
  • Grey - a mixture of black and white hairs. The coat varies from light to iron (very dark). The skin is black
  • Liver chestnut - the darkest chestnut shade
  • Palomino - gold coat with white mane and tail
  • Piebald - large, irregular patterns of black and white
  • Roan - body colour with white hairs intermingled, lightening the overall effect
  • Skewbald - large irregular patches of white and any colour except black
  • Sorrel - light-red chestnut
  • Spotted - small, almost circular, patches of hair of a colour different to the main body distributed over various areas of the body
  • Strawberry roan - chestnut body colour with white hair that has a pinkish-red tinge
