How to overcome problems when fitting a horse bridleHome -> Archive -> Fitting a horse bridle overcoming problemsThe Dogwood horse bridle range includes fine quality horse tack produced by the masters at Crosby and Collegiate: from the Collegiate Cavesson bridle with a padded noseband and browband to the Crosby Weymouth bridle for practicality and style. Once you have browsed our collection and chosen the horse bridle that is perfect for your horse you must fit it correctly to ensure ultimate comfort and high performance. See tips on fitting a horse bridle for more information. However, some horses can be lively while others are just plain temperamental and even the most experienced of equestrians and dedicated of horse lovers may encounter problems when fitting a horse bridle. Here are a few tips that will make fitting your horse bridle a bit easier: Far reach If you can't quite reach the top of your horse's head either stand on a mounting block or you could try slipping the bit inside your horse's mouth and then gently lowering your horse's head so that the head-piece can be fitted. Open wide If your horse refuses to open its mouth you could try holding the bit in your left hand and then slipping the thumb of your right hand into the left side of your horse's mouth, where the lips meet. There are no teeth back there but do take care. Touching the bars in your horse's mouth, which are sensitive, will encourage it to open its mouth whereupon you can fit the bit. Dental check If your horse seriously resists having the bit put in its mouth don't force it. Your horse's teeth may have grown meaning there is less room inside the mouth and the bit may be rubbing against the tooth or other parts of the mouth and causing discomfort. If this is the case it is advisable to organise an equine dentist to visit as soon as possible. Sensitive touch Take extra care when fitting the head-piece, especially behind their ears, as horse's ears are generally very sensitive and they do not like having them touched.
