What to wear at a dressage horse show

If you are to enter in a horse show such as a dressage event, you will be expected to conform to strict rules about what you can and cannot wear. Dressage requires very formal clothing that is worn in a traditional style. This is because this type of horse show has stemmed from royal presentations held in Europe where equestrians were dressed very smartly.

Dressage wear

The level of horse show at which you perform dictates the strictness of the clothing regulations. British Dressage (www.britishdressage.co.uk) is an organisation under whose rules many dressage events are run. The clothing needed to participate in a British Dressage horse show is as follows:

A riding hat, preferably BSI approved
A navy or black riding jacket or hacking jacket
A shirt and tie or stock
Long riding boots with breeches or ankle-length riding boots with jodhpurs or matching gaiters
Riding gloves
A whip (in most competitions)
Spurs

Rules may well be much more relaxed at a club-run or local horse show and it is worth confirming the clothing requirements with the organisers of an event if you are unsure.
