If you are a young horse lover that has found your ideal horse while flicking through the horses for sale section then your next hurdle may be to convince your parents that you are ready to own a horse.

Caring for a horse is a big responsibility which includes daily chores such as mucking out, feeding and exercising your horse that can take up a lot of time so you have to be sure that you are up to the job.

Horse cost

Your first step is to discuss with your parents whether they can afford to buy a horse for sale and help you to pay for its up-keep which can be a minimum of �2,000 a year. You could compromise by agreeing to take a part time job or contribute a large portion of your pocket money to the fund.

Horse boarding

You also need to discuss horse boarding arrangements. Consider whether there is a nearby field that you could rent or if there are any vacancies at your local livery yard.

Horse commitment

It might take you a long time to convince your parents that you are committed but if you really are determined then don't give up. You could demonstrate that you are capable of looking after a horse and committed to the cause in a number of ways:

Volunteer to look after a friend's horse when they go on holiday

Do some work experience at your local riding stables

Start saving for horse tack, horse feed and other equestrian equipment

Do some research about horse care and safe horse riding

Once your parents agree to at least think about letting you have a horse you could sit down together and have a look at the various horses for sale. Check out the classifieds on the internet, in specialist magazines such as Horse and Hound and even ask friends from your riding stables whether they know of any horses for sale.
