The history and development of Le Chameau

Home -> Archive -> Le chameau history

Back in 1927 a young footwear retailer in Cherbourg who was experiencing problems with his supplier decided to throw caution to the wind and engineer his own boots made from natural crepe. We're sure many outdoor enthusiasts are glad he did as this is how Claude Chamot came to launch the Le Chameau brand.

Le Chameau went on to design and hand-make some of the most outstanding boots available on the outdoor market. Those that enjoy leisure pursuits such as horse riding, hunting and fishing have compared the sheer excellence of Le Chameau wear with the likes of Hunter and Barbour.

The master-boot makers at Le Chemeau take the greatest care to select the finest raw materials and are meticulous when making every pair of Le Chameau boots. Each boot is unique and exhibits the exceptional quality of craftsmanship that you would expect from such a widely renowned international country clothing specialist.

Le Chameau makes Wellington boots crafted from 100% natural rubber for men and women, robust walking boots such as the Mouflon Plus and premium shooting boots such as the Vatna and Dama.

However, this level of unsurpassed quality is not limited to Le Chameau boots. The outdoor wear experts also produce shirts made from the finest easy care fabrics; classic lambswool sweaters for ultimate country style; fleeces, body warmers and shooting jackets designed for maximum warming comfort and much more.

Today, Le Chameau's head office is at Dun Sur Auron in the Cher and the business employs around 200 people from the surrounding area. It has the second highest business turnover in Europe of a remarkable 26 million Euros and sells more than 500,000 pairs of Le Chameau boots every year.
