There are a great number of equestrian events enjoyed by horse riding enthusiasts all over the UK. Endurance riding is one equestrian activity that is not for the faint hearted and usually takes place over three days.

Endurance riding, as the name suggests, demands staying power, skilled horsemanship and a high level of fitness from horse and rider. Endurance rides are races over trails stretching from 50-150 miles. The terrain on these rides can be varied which is challenging for both rider and horse.

Equestrians must achieve and maintain a speed of more than 10 miles per hour over the whole distance to be in with a chance of winning. But, many horse riders will take part just for the satisfaction of finishing.

Arabians excel as endurance horses although most breeds of horse and even some ponies are suitable for endurance riding apart from the heavier breeds.

Equestrian health and safety is taken very seriously. All horses are checked over by vets and judges before, during and after the ride.

Your horse should be fully kitted out with horse tack including a bit-less bridle or endurance bridle to make eating and drinking easy on route. An exercise rug from the Dogwood range is also a good idea to let your horse cool gradually after the ride.

Comfort is also very important so make sure that you have a saddle that is the perfect fit for you and your horse.
