Many riders enjoy taking part in horse shows from local events to those at international standards. A three day event is a common type of horse show which consists of three stages: dressage, cross country, and show jumping.

Dressage

Dressage is the exhibition of precise movements and obedience by the horse at the command of the rider. This also involves the horse being supple as some of the movements can be quite complex in higher levels of horse shows.

Cross Country

Cross country is a timed event where a horse and rider must navigate an extended course of obstacles, which include fences and water jumps. A horse must be very fit and have good all-round skills to succeed in this type of horse show.

Show jumping

Show jumping is often a timed event and as well as testing the jumping skill of the horse, also tests the horse's fitness following the cross country horse show of the previous day. Points are lost when a horse refuses a jump, knocks a jump, or the rider falls.
