Favourite horse riding pastimesHome -> Articles -> Horse riding in the ukThousands of people in the UK own a horse and there are many types of horse riding activities in which a rider can take part. It is very much dependant upon both the horse and rider as to what type of pursuit is chosen. Some equestrians enjoy just one type of horse riding, whilst others take part in a variety of events. Horse riding pastimes Many do not enjoy competing in typical horse riding events, simply choosing to enjoy their horse's company hacking out or hunting. The majority of horse owners fit into this category, especially those with older horses. Show jumping is one of the most well-known of the horse riding disciplines and some national events enjoy television coverage. Riders must complete a course of jumps within a set time with as few faults as possible. Dressage is horse riding at its most refined; horses must perform set moves in very specific ways and at certain places within the show ring to be successful in this discipline. Endurance riding is much less competitive than other types of horse riding events. It consists of covering long distances over one or more days, and although there is a winner at the end of the day, riders compete against the clock rather than against each other.
