A Stubben family history - Johannes StubbenHome -> Articles -> Johannes stubben a historyStubben is one of the most respected manufacturers of horse saddles, bridles and other types of horse tack and riding accessories. It is renowned for the stylish appearance of its products, the ingenious blend of advanced and traditional technologies, and the extraordinary performance that it brings out in both horses and riders. So how did Stubben horse tack come about? Its beginnings lie in the small city of Krefeld, Germany and with a man named Johannes Wilhelm Stubben. Johannes Stubben - the founder Johannes Stubben was born into a farming family in 1867 and was the second son. As tradition dictated that only the first born son would inherit the family business, Johannes decided to strike out into a different career. Johannes had always been good at helping his father mend broken horse tack on the family farm and this was what guided him into becoming a saddler. This decision was an important one for Johannes and his descendants, and has brought a great deal of pleasure to thousands of horse riders around the world. Following three years of apprenticeship making horse tack with a well respected company, Johannes Stubben graduated to become a journeyman. Several years later, his exceptional skill and experience led him to be granted the title of Master Saddler. It was at this point that Johannes decided that he wanted to set up his own company making horse saddles and a range of other leather riding equipment, and in 1894, "Stubben" was founded. It was in the Ostwell area of Krefeld, Johannes' home city, in which he set up his business. Krefeld was a quite large city at the time and a centre for economical success, which he felt made a perfect place to start his horse tack company. On top of these reasons, it is also the base of a Prussian cavalry regiment so horse riding equipment was important to the region. He married a lady named Maria and had four children with her, the eldest of whom he named Carl Theodor Stubben. Carl later joined him in his work at making horse saddles and other riding equipment. Stubben quickly became a noted company in Krefeld and rumours of Johannes' skill in crafting outstanding saddles spread across the city. His business flourished and his many years of successful trading set up the firm to become one of the finest in the world.
