The Musto 3 Layer System relies on the basic principle that if you want to keep warm, you have to keep dry. According to Musto researchers, water transmits heat thirty times faster than air so wet skin will become cold much faster than dry skin. It is with this notion in mind that every piece of Musto clothing is developed.

The 3 Layer System consists of, somewhat predictably, three separate layers. The first of these layers is the base layer, which is located closest to the wearer's skin. It is this layer which is charged with the essential job of wicking sweat away from the skin in order to maintain a dry surface.

It is thus made of polyester, which the Musto technical experts tell us is the best material for the job. Cotton linings, which many other country jackets utilise, can actually retain a great deal of water so do not have such a wicking effect.

The middle layer performs an insulating role in Mustos system of keeping the wearer as warm as possible. This layer traps warm, dry air close to the body and also helps conduct water vapour safely out and away from the skin.

The third, outer layer has the important job of being an impenetrable shield against rain and snow. All Musto clothing with the 3 Layer System is completely waterproof thanks to this layer, which also prevents chilling winds from entering the clothing. However, this is not all the third layer does. It must also complete the process of drawing sweat away from the skin and out of the fabric. In order to achieve this, it utilises breathable materials to transmit water vapour from the middle layer out into the air, leaving the wearer warm and dry.
