Thousands of people each year are the victims of rural crime in which horse tack is stolen. Thieves are attracted to horse tack for a range of reasons, including that it is often stored in a barn or tack room that is not in close proximity to houses where people could be alerted by untoward noises.

Although many equestrians are becoming more aware of tack room break-ins, some tack rooms are ill-secured and locks can easily be forced. Much of the time, all of a rider's horse tack is stored in one place, making it very convenient for thieves, enabling them to nip in and out in a matter of minutes.

Some tips to prevent horse tack theft

Many horse riders are left distraught and angry following the theft of their horse tack. Here are some tips from Devon and Cornwall Police that will help to prevent tack theft happening to you:

Make it difficult for thieves to access your property

Keep your buildings, gates and fences in good condition

Ensure buildings and vehicles are locked as securely as possible

Don't leave tools or equipment around that could be used to break in to your own property

Store horse tack and other equipment inside a secure building when you are not using it

Display notices declaring CCTV and other security measures
