Thirty of the world's top horse riders, including twelve from Britain, will be competing over four days in April for the richest single class in British horse show jumping and the esteemed title of British Open Champion 2006.

The British Open Show Jumping Championships is one of the most prestigious events in the International show jumping calendar. The horse event is unique in its format. Riders compete in championship rounds on the first three days of the event. A ‘cut' is then made on the Saturday and the top twenty horse riders from the rounds go through to contest the British Open Final on the Sunday afternoon.

Reigning British Open 2005 Champion, Robert Smith will be defending his title this year and previous champions Robert Whitaker and Nick Skelton are set to take part.

The twelve top British horse riders on the latest BSJA ranking list (as at 31 December 2005) who will receive automatic invitations to take part in the British open are:

  • Robert Smith
  • John Whitaker
  • Ellen Whitaker
  • Robert Whitaker
  • Tim Stockdale
  • Ben Maher
  • William Funnell
  • Mark Armstrong
  • Guy Williams
  • Tim Gredley

A full programme of international horse show jumping will run alongside the British Open, including the International Accumulator and the highly charged British Open Puissance. The country's top twenty under 23 horse riders will compete in the World Class Start & Potential Under 23. Total prize fund at the event extends to over £150,000.

Indoor cross country

A new event at this year's British Open will be indoor cross country. Spectators for the first time in this country will be able to watch top class eventers tackle a series of cross country jumps in a unique indoor arena setting.
