A look at the different types of leather used in Stubben's prestigious saddles

Traditionally, horse saddles have been made of leather and it is only recently that synthetic saddles have been introduced as an alternative.  Whilst these have become fairly popular in some equestrian circles, leather saddles are still the preferred choice for millions of horse riders across the world.

There are a number of reasons why leather saddles are so popular.  Some equestrians simply like the classic look, whilst others appreciate the feel that comes with the luxurious qualities of a good leather saddle.  There is also a much greater selection of styles and fits for leather saddles from which horse riders can pick the one that best matches their requirements.  Whilst leather saddles do require more care than synthetics, many equestrians take pleasure and pride in tending to their leather horse tack.

Stubben is one of the most highly regarded manufacturers of leather saddles and other horse riding equipment.  The company has more than a century of experience in making premium leather horse tack – experience which can be seen in the beautiful quality of the saddles and bridles that it produces.
Types of leather used in Stubben saddles
The process of crafting a Stubben saddle places much importance on the tanning of the leather.  It undergoes a lengthy tanning process in which the raw hide is matured and vegetably tanned to create very soft, supple leather.  This fine quality leather is then treated with a no-slip dressing in order to provide the very best finish.

Many Stubben saddles, including the Juventus S, Siegfried VSD and Roxane, are made from cowhide which has been embossed with the Stubben logo.  Although this is the standard leather used in Stubben's horse tack, there is nothing standard about it, and its luxurious properties set it far apart from other manufacturers' saddles.

A number of Stubben saddles also incorporate the use of special doubled saddle leather, which is extra-luxurious and feels broken in even when new.  The supple leather is attached to a unique backing leather and is treated to offer equestrians exceptional grip.

Other saddles in Stubben's range, such as the Artus, Camelot and Edelweiss, combine the special doubled saddle leather with smooth cowhide.  This results in an incredibly soft, comfortable material which is ideal for close contact saddles.

A number of other leathers are also used across the range of Stubben saddles.  This includes special water buffalo leather, which is used in the Colombo saddle, cuir crispe leather, from which the Excalibur is made, and Malja-Juchten embossed cowhide, which can be seen in the Kerry LD saddle.
