Whether you have ridden so much that you have worn your old saddle out or you are buying a set of horse tack for your first horse, a Stubben saddle is sure to suit your needs. Made from luxurious leather that has been beautifully hand-crafted and finished, Stubben saddles are set apart from other horse saddles in looks, comfort and performance.
The masters at Stubben have over 100 years of experience in the saddle-making business and over this time have accrued a great deal of knowledge about the shapes of horses and riders. Comfort for both is always the foremost principle in Stubben's saddle designs as they know that a badly-fitting or uncomfortable saddle can result in injury to the horse and discomfort to the equestrian.
Stubben saddlers have taken this knowledge and implemented it extremely effectively in their wide range, which includes VSS and VSD saddles, dressage saddles, Icelandic saddles and close contact saddles.
Although every effort has been made by Stubben to create the most comfortable saddle for you and your horse, there are a few things you can do in order to get a customised fit.
Using a Stubben saddle for the first time When first using your Stubben saddle, it is recommended that you do not use a saddle pad for the first 20 hours of riding. This is due to the fact the saddle is made from leather and it will absorb natural oils which help it to mould to your horse's shape. By not using a pad you will end up with a saddle that is much more comfortable for your horse to wear. You should be careful that the Stubben saddle is positioned correctly on your horse's back so that it does not restrict movement or cause any injuries. To place the saddle, you should put it on the withers and slide it back until it settles behind the shoulder, ensuring that it is not interfering with the withers.
The girth is designed to be attached by the first and third billets on the Stubben saddle, while the second billet simply acts as a spare. After the girth has been done up, the cantle of the saddle should be around 1" higher than the pommel. At this point, you should check the clearance that the pommel of the saddle has over the withers of your horse to ensure it is possible to fit two fingers in between.
As your Stubben saddle is used, the wool flocking in the panels will naturally compress. This will bring you into closer contact with your horse, as well as offering a perfectly customised fit for your horse's body. Unless there is any dramatic change in your horse's proportions or the saddle needs to be used on a different horse, there should be no need for reflocking.
