More than 200 horses and their equestrian equipment have been rescued from the raging fires around Los Angeles. Known as the 'Station' fire, it is continuing to threaten properties and livestock in the surrounding dry hills.
The LA County Department of Animal Care and Control has set up three rescue sites spread over a 60 mile radius for the horses which is run by 115 volunteers.
Mary Lukens, Emergency Coordinating Officer said, "We have a very active horse community here with all types of horses from leisure, hunter jumpers, endurance to cattle horses. I run the equine response team. All our volunteers, evacuating the horses, are horse people."
Although horse owners around the area are well prepared for such eventualities due to the high fire risk in the area, no fires to the scale of the 'Station' fire has ever been recorded in the county's history.
The three centres have so far taken in 87 horses, a cow, a boar, four lamas and two sheep. As well as providing their name and telephone number, owners are also encouraged to bring any equestrian equipment such as feed buckets and horse feed, headcollars, grooming kits and any medicines the horse is on.
