Riders are upping their game on equestrian safety equipment by working towards a new system with The British Horse Society (BHS), British Cycling, and Cycling Time Trials teaming up to prevent accidents on the roads for equestrians and cyclists alike.
The BHS is aiming to increase understanding between the two sports and publishing guidance in the form of leaflets and improved information on organisation’s websites which will be updated at the end of the month.
Contact between the individual websites will also help riders and cyclists decide and plan routes so riders can keep a check on cycling events and cyclists can plan to take routes out of the away of BHS yards.
This is an important move to improve road safety, with accidents happening even while appropriate safety equipment is in use.
Equestrian, Jess Snape-Burns from Derbys explained, “A friend was riding her horse when a cyclist overtook them at speed through a fairly narrow gap — and changed gears while doing so.
“The horse bolted and my friend hurt her leg badly. The cyclist was apologetic, and said ‘I didn’t know it would frighten him’.”
