Prestigious country clothing firm Barbour has announced that it is working in partnership with Northumbria University to create a task for third year fashion students.

Barbour, which is best known for its traditional waxed jackets, is setting a brief which students will complete as part of their coursework. They will be asked to create an outfit that sits well with the brand's classic image but which will also be very appealing to younger people who want to be fashionable.

The students will be provided with materials to be used in the clothing, including Barbour wax cotton material, trims and zips.

A spokesperson for Barbour explained: "What we are looking for is an understanding of the essence of the Barbour brand and our unique 'stylisms' which can then be adapted to their own creative designs."

Students have until May to complete the task, at which time a panel of representatives from Barbour and Northumbria University will select their favourite of the designs. The creator of this design will be awarded £250 and have their work displayed in an exhibition.

The Fashion Course leader at Northumbria University said: "Our course is all about developing designers who can combine vision and realism to produce directional fashion that people want to wear.

"Working with industry is key to achieving this and collaborating with Barbour will give our students an invaluable insight into what it takes to establish and evolve what is truly an archetypal British brand."
