GB's Lee Pearson to head new FEI Equestrian Committee

The FEI (International Equestrian Federation) has appointed Great Britain's Paralympic hero Lee Pearson to head its newly formed Athlete’s Committee. Winner of 6 gold Paralympics medals, Lee will chair the new consultative body which aims to give equestrian athletes an official voice at the FEI.

The formation of an Equestrian Athlete committee was initiated by FEI president HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein in response to a number of requests from athletes at the World Equestrian Games in 2006.

Candidates were put forward by each National Federation from the eight equestrian disciplines; the final 8 having been selected by the International Equestrian Federation at its General Assembly on 15th April 2007.

The committee comprises:

• Para Equestrian - Lee Pearson (GBR)

• Dressage - Isabel Werth (GER)

• Show Jumping - Cayetano Martinez de Irujo (ESP)

• Eventing - Andrew Hoy (AUS)

• Driving - Barry Capstick (IRL)

• Reigning - Jeannette Krähenbühl (SUI)

• Vaulting - Megan Benjamin (USA)

• Endurance - Mercedes Tapia (ARG)

The chairman of the British Equestrian Federation (BEF), Hugh Thomas, said, "We are delighted that our candidate has been chosen to head the new International Committee. Lee is one of the most successful riders in the world and this choice of Chair reflects the importance that the FEI attaches to Paralympic sport."

The committee will serve until the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in 2010 when the next committee is due for election.
