Swiss woman’s horse riding journey reaches the UK

As long distance horse riding goes, 7,000km is enough to put the saddle sores up any equestrian rider. However, this is not so for one such Swiss horse rider who is on an epic journey from Switzerland, through France, England and Ireland, covering over 7,000km which she estimates will take her over one and a half years.

Together with her eight-year-old French Trotter, the aim for the former policewoman was to fulfil a dream and raise money for two charities that look after retired horses.

Of the journey, 24-year old Jessica Bigler said: “I’m really enjoying it and Gitan (her horse) is fine. I’ve noticed a big difference between French and English people. People here (England) are more curious about what I am doing, they ask me lots of questions and are very friendly!”

To ensure the journey is as cost efficient as possible, the pair carry a saddlebag as part of their horse tack, which includes within it; a tent, sleeping bag, vetbed as well as a military rug.

For the journey Jessica is using an endurance/long distance saddle which is comfortable and lightweight for the horse as well as suitable for the rider’s comfort.
