North Somerset equestrians urged to mark horse tack

Police in North Somerset have launched a scheme to help equestrians protect their horse tack from thieves.

Named Horse Watch, the scheme focuses on private horse owners, livery yards and stables within the North Somerset area. It will provide advice on the steps equestrians can take to secure their property and reduce the chance of being targeted by criminals, as well as support to those who have become victims of crime.

The police are holding horse tack marking sessions in which horse riders can bring their saddles, bridles and other riding equipment to be permanently marked with their details.

According to a police community support officer, these sessions have proven to be very successful thus far, with more than £15,000 worth of horse tack being marked in a single session.

She said: "We urge people to register their horses and equipment to avoid becoming a victim of equine crime."

Information on joining the Horse Watch scheme in the North Somerset area can be obtained by calling PCSO Vicky Skeath or PCSO Eleanor French on 0845 4567000.
