Barbour announces winner for its country clothing student taskHome -> News -> Laura johnston triumphs in barbour design assignmentIt has recently been announced that 22 year old Laura Johnston has taken top spot in the Barbour fashion project, held at Northumbria University School of Design. The brief set by Barbour was to design a piece of country clothing that would attract a younger, more fashion conscious audience whilst maintaining the integrity of Barbour’s heritage; the theme being Tyne & Country. Students could choose from menswear, ladies wear, knitwear or textiles as a basis for design and from this they were left to their own devices. The eventual winner, Laura Johnston, took her inspiration from a lighthouse at South Shields. She created a contemporary black wax jacket which was made from Barbour’s renowned wax cotton fabric. Gary Janes, designer for Barbour, remarked, “After much deliberation, we decided that Laura’s design not only answered the brief but the originality of the garment made it a very stylish and potentially marketable jacket.” For taking top honours Laura receives a cheque for £250 from Barbour, and Northumbria University’s fashion programme will receive a further £250. |
