Launched on the 23rd May 2007, the new Equine Health & Welfare Strategy for Great Britain is aimed at improving disease surveillance and helping to prioritise resources for tackling equine diseases.

The new strategy was announced by Barry Gardiner MP, Parliamentary under Secretary for Rural Affairs, Biodiversity and Landscapes, and Minister for the Horse on 22 March 2007.

He said: “The Equine Health & Welfare Strategy will provide vital guidance to horse owners for the next decade.”

With an estimated 1.3 million horses, ponies and donkeys in Britain, the initiative will be supported by the minimum standards for equestrian care that were agreed by the equine industry in the Equine Industry Welfare Guidelines Compendium. It is seen that the maintenance of healthy horses is important to the economy of the equine industry.

The vision set out in the strategy is divided into eight aims; each aim being supported by a champion body whose task it is to ensure the actions that underpin the aim are delivered.

The 10 year goal of the Equine Health & Welfare Strategy for Great Britain is to ensure all those responsible for equines understand and carry out their duty.
