Prince Charles visits scheme without Wellington boots

Prince Charles apparently enjoyed himself when he visited an ambitious conservation scheme near Huntingdon – despite getting muddy because he wasn't wearing Wellington boots.

The Prince was shown around the Great Fen Project, which is based at the Woodwalten Fen National Nature Reserve, by its manager in a spring visit.

According to the manager, the Prince and a group of officials were told about the plans for and the development of the £20 million conservation scheme, which aims to see the fenland return to its natural state of several centuries ago.

However, the Prince was the only one who didn't don Wellington boots for the tour of the wetland, and he walked away with mud-spattered country footwear and trousers as a result.

Despite this, the Great Fen Project manager felt that the visit was a success.

He said: "It was really good. I am sure that he enjoyed himself and that he would have liked to stay for longer if time had permitted.

"He was asking questions about conservation in general and about the project, as well as the benefits for the local community and its future.

"He said at the end that he would like to come back in another decade and looked forward to seeing the changes that had been made."
