Hunter Boot Ltd moves production facility.Home -> News -> Hunter boots to be made abroadDespite several years of battling to keep the bulk of its workforce in Scotland, Hunter Boot Ltd has taken the decision to up sticks and move the production facilities for most of its famous welly boots to China and Serbia. After an extremely wet British summertime, with Hunter Wellingtons being taken up as much as a fashion item by the likes of Keira Knightley and Kate Moss as a staple piece of country attire, the demand for Hunter welly boots was unprecedented. Despite these strong sales, it appears that the Wellington boot company, newly taken over by a consortium, has been unable to find a way through its financial difficulties. A statement for Hunter Boot Ltdsaid that it is “no longer economically viable” to make the entire range in Scotland, forcing operations to be scaled down in Dumfries. It also stated: "The management expresses great regret that these measures are necessary at this time and is providing support and guidance to the staff affected." The company revealed that it would continue to make a "limited collection" of Hunter wellies in Scotland for the moment, and for that reason is keeping on 29 of the workforce. This move by the renowned Hunter Wellington boot company follows many British firms that are moving their production facilities to the more cost effective far eastern markets. |
