Instead of packing bikinis and snorkeling gear, an increasing number of horse owners are packing their jodhpurs and horse riding clothing ready for a horsey 'staycation' in a bid to save money during the credit crunch.

Long distance rider Vyv Wood-Gee has been 'staycationing' with her horse for 17 years and never spends over £300 for a week away.

As well as giving you the chance to discover more of the British countryside, holidaying with your horse also helps you form a close bond with your mount. 'Staycationer' Fiona says, "It's the best way of seeing the countryside; it's fun and especially good for forging a bond with a new horse."

Given the current exchange rates and economic climate, taking the trailer instead of the plane is kinder on the wallet and much more environmentally friendly.
