Operation Esther, the charitable organisation set up by two Horse & Hound readers in the wake of the Amersham rescue, has been mobilised again to provide emergency assistance to an animal sanctuary that caught fire on the 31st January 2008.

The Alternative Animal Sanctuary in Pepperstock, Luton currently houses 34 horses in addition to a number of other animals including pigs, goats, cats, rabbits, birds and fish.  The fire, which blazed from 11pm to 5.30am, took a number of fatalities including 6 dogs and several geese.  All 34 horses escaped unharmed.

The co-founder of Operation Esther has posted pleas for help on the Horse & Hound website and is arranging an emergency delivery of goods to Pepperstock.  Of the horse tack items that they are looking to get hold of are horse rugs, horse feed, hay and any items of tack that people may have sitting about going spare.

The manager of the sanctuary said:

“One of the biggest problems is weather, we’re worried about what will happen to the horses.  We can’t bring them in as their stables are all burnt down.  It is a complete nightmare.”
