Halters and head collars

Horse tack is essential equestrian equipment for any horse riding activity. Along with bridles, bits, martingales, reins and stirrup irons the halter is part of the Dogwood horse tack collection.

The halter or head collar is an arrangement of straps that fits around the back of the horse's neck and across the muzzle. It is designed so that the rider can pull on the muzzle end of the halter when communicating with the horse and controlling the direction of its head.

However, the halter exerts less control over the horse than the bridle, as it does not feature the bit. The bit is a metal or synthetic mouthpiece that attaches to both the bridle and the reins.

The halter is particularly useful when leading a group of horses, and is ideal when training young horses or gently restraining older horses.
