Jodhpurs and breeches from Dogwood
Dogwood's range of jodhpurs and breeches are excellent equestrian trousers for horse riding, whether enjoying a casual day out on horseback, a cross country endurance test or wanting to look perfect for competitions.
It is helpful to understand the difference between these two types of contrasting riding trousers, especially when many use the term 'breeches' interchangeably with 'jodhpurs'.
Here at Dogwood we won't confuse you - our short explanations and clear photographs clear up any confusion. Here's our simple perspective: jodhpurs are long trousers that end at the ankle and can be worn with long or short riding boots and breeches end at the calf so are worn with long riding boots. And now, here's our full descriptions.
Breeches tend to be shorter than jodhpurs, usually ending at the calf - but they are just as versatile and hard-wearing for the job they must do while horse riding. Take a look at our Caldene and Kentucky varieties in our online collection.
In the past they had a distinctive flare across the thighs while over the rest of the legs they fitted tightly. Nowadays modern stretch materials ensure they can be purchased 'skin tight'. Out have gone old-fashioned buckles and laces to be replaced by velcro, zipper and hook and bar fastenings that ensure secure comfort and the ideal ride.
Full seat breeches - help riders stay gripped to the horse and are designed primarily for dressage as well as eventing and other riding activities. They allow riders to stay as quiet as possible in the saddle with grippy material that covers from the knee, along the inner thighs and across the buttocks. Full seat breeches should be complimented by half chaps or long riding boots. For full seat, or sticky bum breeches, please see the Caldene Belgrade, Kentucky Miami City, Caldene Mornington and Silkstone and the Kentucky Chicago City ladies' breech.
Knee patch breeches - again using grippy material to feel attached to one's horse, but this time the material covers just the inside of the knees. Hunt seat riders wear knee patch breeches. Eventers, show hunters and jumpers, pleasure and endurance riders use knee patch breeches. See the Caldene Shrewley men's breech.
The word 'jodhpur' derived from the ancient city of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, North India, where polo players used to wear tight fitting trousers. The trousers became popular in the UK and the name jodhpur was adopted.
Jodhpurs are a full-length riding trouser that reaches to the ankle. Dogwood is pleased to offer these in two brands - Kentucky and Caldene. Most often seen on children, adult riders wear them in show rings - but also while riding casually and in riding lessons. These useful equestrian trousers are often fitted with elastic stirrups or straps that keep the jodphur in position on the legs by running under riders boots. The riding boots that tend to be used with jodhpurs are paddock or jodhpur boots. Dogwood has a fabulous collection of these boots, both Tredstep, Tuffa and Brogini jodhpur boots.
