The Dogwood Equestrian Collection - High quality riding gloves

Riding gloves are a compulsory piece of equestrian clothing for dressage events and other riding competitions, but most riders choose to wear them whenever they take their horse out.

There are two main reasons to wear gloves when riding; firstly as protection for your hands against the cold, wet, and wind; secondly to make it more comfortable to hold the reins for extended periods of time.

Riding gloves

Most riders have a couple of pairs of riding gloves that they will use for different conditions. In wintertime, for instance, a pair of thick, warm riding gloves might well be the first choice for a rider, whereas in summertime, a pair of thin, cool riding gloves would be much more appropriate.

There are many different types of riding gloves to choose between; soft leather, warm fleece, and winter-proof neoprene to name but a few. The choice of the best type of riding glove to wear is very much dependent on the individual rider and the weather conditions in which they ride.

Riding gloves are reinforced between the first two fingers to provide additional protection from the reins. Some riding gloves also have bobbles or pimples which improve the rider's grip on the reins. Both thin, bobbled gloves and fingerless gloves make tightening or loosening fiddly buckles much easier compared to thick gloves.

Although riding gloves are compulsory for dressage, no precise style or colour is required. As long as the gloves are discrete, they will be considered acceptable for most competitions. Most riders tend to wear black or dark brown riding gloves for eventing.
