A Stubben family history - Werner Stubben

Stubben is one of the oldest and most well-respected companies that supply premium leather horse tack. Nothing but the finest leather - whether it is cowhide or water buffalo - is used in creating Stubben saddles and other tack, building them a reputation for exceptional quality and durability.

The Stubben business was started back in 1894 by Johannes Stubben, who was a particularly fine saddler. Find out more about Johannes Stubben.

Johannes then passed the business onto his son, Carl, who also excelled in this craft and continued to produce extremely fine quality saddles and other leather goods. Read more about Carl Stubben.

Werner Stubben - the businessman

Carl Stubben had only one child, a son named Werner who was born in 1923. However, the two spent little time together as Carls passion for the horse tack company took up much of his days. As a result, Werner spent much of his childhood with his grandmother.

The restricted contact Werner had with his father meant that he did not grow up with the same infatuation for leatherworking and horse tack as his father or grandfather. Instead, his interests lay in academia and he did extremely well in his years of schooling.

However, the Second World War interrupted Werner Stubbens studies and he joined the army at the age of 17. At the end of the war, he returned to the Krefeld house where he had grown up. He found that both the home and the workshop that had housed the legendary saddle-making business had been practically destroyed.

Carl and Werner undertook the rebuilding project together and following years of hard work, they reconstructed the house and reopened the Stubben store in 1949. Contrary to the plans he had made in early life, Werner became immersed in the leather-working company. He made an excellent businessman and he was a key figure in restarting and expanding the firm.

His flair for languages - he spoke five fluently - helped him enormously in bringing Stubben international recognition. He made contacts in other countries that were looking to buy fine quality saddles and horse tack and this prompted the reopening of the saddle-making part of the company.

Werner was the inspiration behind the naming of Stubben saddles and it is down to him that the Siegfried and the Tristan saddles have these titles. His naming policy allowed Stubben saddles to be easily recognisable and it was not long before these terms became synonymous with the exceptional craftsmanship with which they were made.

His polite yet forthright manner and excellent taste made Werner a distinguished figure in horse tack sales. He was very loyal to certain suppliers and retailers, leading to him quickly becoming highly-respected with contacts across the world.

It was Werners hard-work and business acumen that first helped Stubben to reach the international marketplace. Sadly Werner died in 1998 but the horse tack company has continued to flourish in the hands of Ralph and Frank Stubben, his sons.
