The business of making Hunter Wellington boots
The Hunter Rubber Company, which is based in Dumfries, makes the iconic Hunter Wellington boots. However, Hunter wellies were not always made by the Hunter Rubber Company.
The business of making Hunter wellies
The business that was to eventually make Hunter Wellington boots was started up in 1856 by Henry Lee Norris and was called the North British Rubber Company. This name stayed the same for many years and the company grew successful making a whole range of rubber products, including wellies.
During the 1950s, the Green Hunter and Royal Hunter styles were introduced and it is these rubber boots that have become so well known in Britain and across the world. In 1966, the company was renamed Uniroyal. During the 1970s the product range changed slightly as the golf ball and tyre parts of the business were sold off.
In 1987 the company name changed again when Uniroyal was bought by the Gates Rubber Company of Colorado. At this time, it was the Gates Rubber Co. Ltd. that was producing Hunter Wellington boots.
Almost a decade later, in 1996, Tomkins PLC of London bought the Gates company. Tomkins then arranged for the Gates part of the business to become one of a group of companies, Interfloor, in 2002.
In recent years
The year 2004 saw a management buy out of Hunter Wellington boots and the creation of the Hunter Rubber Company. But, the firm was struggling financially and was forced to go into administration in April 2006 and it was feared that the traditional Hunter wellies that were so central to British rural life may be lost.
However, a consortium led by the notable Conservative party treasurer Jonathon Marland saved the classic brand, taking control of the Hunter Rubber Company in May 2006. This was an excellent result for both the firm, which has been a focal point for the last 150 years in Dumfries, and the employees, who were given confirmation that no further jobs would be lost.
The name may change but the welly stays the same
Although the Hunter Wellington boot has been made under the control of a number of different companies, the fine quality of the products has not changed. Carefully hand-made by master craftsmen with a combination of traditional and new techniques, these premium rubber boots are unrivalled in all respects.
