High-quality chaps and gaitersHorse riding chaps and gaiters, whether Tredstep or Sergio Grasso, help prevent the legs from being rubbed when you are not wearing long riding boots. Chaps and gaiters work alongside jodhpur boots by providing a secure and supporting layer between your jodhpurs or breeches and your leg's contact with the horse and saddle. Without them your lower leg will get pinched by movement in the saddle and will leave you with sore and blistered legs. We have a wide range of comfy, durable and well fitting gaiters, together with half and full length riding chaps in traditional styles to suit riders of all proficiencies. Full length riding chaps Full length riding chaps are two separate leg coverings that attach to a belt and end at the ankles. They originated from cowboys in America who had to spend all day in the saddle; they needed protection from undergrowth and cattle horns. Riding chaps are usually made from materials such as suede and leather and a well-fitting pair will keep a rider's legs protected as well as warm and dry in less sunny climes. Tredstep half chaps cover the area between the knees and the ankles which is often enclosed by a long leather riding boot. They are usually secured by an elasticated strap which goes under the jodhpur boot and either a Velcro or a zip fastening that goes up the length of the chap. Half chaps provide protection, support and security to a rider's shin and calves, and also stop jodhpurs from rising up the rider's legs. Well fitting half chaps offer increased contact and feel on the horse, so the rider can effectively use the aids without being hindered. Colour coordinated half chaps and jodhpur boots are permitted in some low level equestrian competitions. The range of half chaps from Tredstep is outstanding, and here at Dogwood we present you with their finest examples. From the Original elasticated suede half chap, to the new XTreme half chap and the finest all leather Tredstep Deluxe half chap. Gaiters are knee to ankle coverings, much like half chaps, that fit very closely and are traditionally made from leather. The main difference between chaps and gaiters is the material that they are crafted from. Half chaps are usually a fabric material and are more akin to being used for day to day riding and round the yard, whereas gaiters, if colour matched with your jodhpur boots, can give the impression of a long leather riding boot. There are a lot of horse shows that now allow entrants to wear gaiters as an alternative to long riding boots, as long as they are made from leather which is the same colour and style as the jodhpur boots the rider is wearing. An ideal pairing would be the Sergio Grasso 260 Torino gaiters and the Sergio Grasso 500 Rapello boot, or the Tredstep Pro Gaiter Legging with the Tredstep Sport Horse jodhpur boot. Our stylish and comfortable range of half and full length riding chaps and gaiters are excellent for all horse riders; amateur and professional alike.
