High-quality chaps and gaiters

Riding chaps and gaiters help to protect the legs from blisters as a result of rubbing jodhpurs, as well as preventing dirt from being transferred from the horse to your clothing. We have a wide range of comfy, durable gaiters and half length riding chaps in traditional styles to suit riders of all proficiencies.

Full length riding chaps

Full length riding chaps are two separate leg coverings that attach to a belt and end at the ankles. They originated from cowboys in America who had to spend all day in the saddle, who needed protection from undergrowth and cattle horns. Riding chaps are made from materials such as suede and leather, and well-fitting full length chaps will keep a rider's legs warm and dry in winter.

An additional benefit of riding chaps is that chaps made of a good material, like suede, will also help with gripping the saddle.

Half chaps

Half chaps cover the area between the knees and the ankles, and are secured by a strap which goes under the jodhpur boot. These provide protection to a rider's shin and calves, as well as stopping jodhpurs from rising up the horse rider's legs. As with riding chaps, they can come in a variety of materials, and are often secured by a zip or Velcro.

Snugly fitting half chaps also provide better contact with the horse, so allowing the rider better control over the horse. Half chaps worn with jodhpur boots are permitted in some low levels of equestrian competition, such as junior and novice events.

Gaiters

Gaiters are knee to ankle coverings that fit very closely and are traditionally made from leather.

Most British Horse Society competitions allow entrants to wear gaiters as an alternative to long riding boots, as long as they are made from leather which is the same colour and style as the jodhpur boots the rider is wearing.
