Turning out rugs to keep your horse warm, dry and clean

Dogwood's turning out rugs are the ideal way to keep your horse dry and clean while out in the field. The finest, weather-proof materials will keep your horse sheltered from bitter winds and rain while the rug also protects your horse from mud and dust.

Our winter turning out rugs have the benefit of padding or fleece linings for extra warmth. However, the revolutionary, breathable material will allow any perspiration to be evaporated so your horse's skin can breathe naturally.

Although warm and durable Dogwood's turn out rugs are more light weight than the traditional style rugs, meaning your horse will not suffer chaffing on the shoulders, chest and withers.

Turning out rugs that fit to perfection

When buying a horse blanket it is paramount that it fits correctly so that your horse is comfortable and can move freely. The best way to achieve this is to use our horse blanket measuring guide. But here are a few tips about buying and fitting horse rugs:

Make sure the horse rug is not too tight around the neck and the chest
Make sure the horse rug covers the horse's belly and has a good overlap at the front to keep the heat in
Make sure that turn out rugs with hind leg straps are adjusted to allow a hand's width to be placed between the back of the horse's leg and the strap
Make sure that the leg straps used to hold the blanket in place are not too tight as this can cause chaffing
Make sure that leg straps are not too loose as the horse may catch its hooves in the straps when lying down
Invest in one of our lightweight turn out horse rugs for the summer as well as one of our heavyweight turn out rugs for the colder weather
